Egypt: make a model pyramid
When someone mentions Egypt, the first thing that comes to mind are pyramids. Specifically, the pyramids of Giza. There are around eighty pyramids in Egypt, but the three largest and best preserved were built at Giza.
The largest of the three pyramids, the Great Pyramid of Giza, is one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. In fact, it’s the only one of the original wonders that still exists! It was constructed around 3500 BCE!!
Most experts believe that the Pyramids in Egypt were built for Pharaohs. The pyramids were to hold all the treasures that the pharaohs would take to the afterlife with them. The Great Pyramid of Giza was built for a Pharaoh named Khufu.
did you know?
When the Great Pyramid of Giza was built, it was 230m wide at the base and 147m tall! Because of erosion, the pyramid is now closer to 139 metres tall. The amazing thing about this Pyramid is that it was the tallest manmade structure on Earth from when it was constructed until 1300 CE – that’s almost 5000 years at the top!!!
Historians estimate that it took more than 20,000 workers more than 20 years to build the Great Pyramid, and they used more than 2 million stone blocks to build it! Some of the stone blocks weigh around 900kg!
Incredibly, the pyramid lines up perfectly with the points of a compass and the pyramid is almost completely symmetrical!
what is a net?
A pyramid can be opened along it’s edges to create a flat shape. This flat shape is called the net of the solid.
