Greece is a country located in the south-eastern part of Europe right at the end of the Balkan Peninsula. Its official name is the Hellenic Republic. Hellenic is another word for Greek and means the same thing. In fact, it was the Romans that named the country Graecia and its people Graeci, but the Greeks call their land Hellas and themselves Hellenes. The Roman empire and Greece have a long and very intertwined history!
The capital city Athens has many ruins of archaeological significance and is home to about 4 million of the country’s 11 million inhabitants.
Greece is well-known for its culture, the Greek gods, the stunning scenery, and the many ancient ruins that survive today. It is sometimes called the ‘cradle of western civilisation’ because it is the place where democracy was created.
